Becker Iron & Metal is devoted in continually improving our business through our RIOS program. While most people are familiar with ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 program, few know about RIOS. RIOS, or Recycling Industry Operating Standard, is a system designed to help scrap recycling companies manage the quality, environmental, and health & safety (QEH&S) issues in their operations. Overall, RIOS is called an "integrated management system standard." It is integrated because it combines the management of separate QEH&S issues into a single unified system. It is a management system standard because it provides a system framework for recycling plants to use to achieve measurable continual improvement in their QEH&S performance. Notably, RIOS is the first integrated QEH&S management system standard developed specifically for the scrap recycling industry.
- RIOS is an integrated management system standard for quality, environment, and health & safety, developed by the scrap recycling industry for the scrap recycling industry. RIOS is specifically relevant to scrap operations whereas the ISO and OHSAS standards are not.
- RIOS is based on the industry-relevant elements of ISO 9001 for quality, ISO 14001 for environment, and OHSAS 18001 for health & safety without the overlap among them. RIOS is functionally equivalent to all three standards.
- RIOS has an accredited certification program supported by the ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation Board (ANAB), as do ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. This certification allows for independent verification of RIOS compliance, which is available for ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 compliance.
